Description
DESCRIPTION: Archive of articles signed by Orville Wright including a fragment of wing from the Wright Flyer. Includes: 1) Copy of the Edison Institute Dedication of the Wright Brothers Home and Shop in Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan, April 16 1938. Affixed to the page facing the title page is a photographic print from the original negative to the only picture taken of man's first flight; the image shows Orville Wright on the Wright Flyer with Wilbur Wright running alongside at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. Affixed to the bottom margin of the image is a fabric fragment, and handwritten in ink to the right of the fabric is "This little piece of wing covering did its part in lifting the plane in this flight. O.W." The first page of the book is inscribed "To John W. Dougherty / Orville Wright." 6-1/2" wide x 9-1/4" high. The book shows minor shelf wear to the binding. 2) Large photographic print of the Wright Flyer at the Wright Brothers' camp and hangar in Kitty Hawk, NC in 1903. The photo shows the camp as it appeared in 1903 with the 48' x 16' shed or hangar on the left and the Wright brothers' 42' x 16' living quarters on the right. Printed from a 5" x 7" glass dry plate negative. Attributed to Wilbur and/or Orville Wright. The original glass negative from the from the Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright reside in the Library of Congress, source number LC-W861-16 DLC. 24" high x 36" wide. Shows creases from having been rolled and associated undulations. 1" horizontal tear originating from center of left edge. 3) A plan drawing of the Wright Flyer drawn to 1/40 scale. Pen and ink on paper, signed "By Bollinger" lower right. 15" high x 22" wide. With creases from being rolled; scattered tears to margins, one with associated small loss upper left. Scattered areas of soil associated with creases. 4) A group of eight Christmas cards addressed to Mr. and Mrs. John Dougherty of Dayton, Ohio dated from 1939 to 1947. Two of the cards are hand-signed by Orville Wright. Six of the cards have their original envelopes. 5) Two copies of a newspaper clipping form the February 15, 1939 edition of the Dayton Herald reporting on the dedication of the Wright Library in Oakwood, Ohio. The picture shows the Oakwood library board including Orville Wright and Mrs. John Daugherty. 6) Two items from the Wright Library Board addressed to Mrs. John Dougherty dated December 19, 1946. One is a letter accepting her resignation as a member of the Wright Library Board. The other is a resolution accepting her resignation and noting her extraordinary 23 years of service to the board. The resolution notes that Mrs. Dougherty was one of the first members appointed to the board in 1923, and that she served as the vice-president from 1929 through 1933 and as the secretary-treasurer in 1942. The resolution is signed by board president Max Kohnop and secretary Alberta Carder. With associated envelope. 11" high x 7" wide. 7) Various newspaper clippings about the life of, death of, and artifacts of Orville Wright. PROVENANCE: Mrs. John (Bess) Dougherty of Dayton, Ohio was a member of the Wright Library Board from it's inception in 1923 until 1946; she served along Orville Wright on the Board during his tenure from 1934-1946. Her husband, John Dougherty, was an educator, sculptor, and photographer. The collection was consigned by the Daughertys' granddaughter. MEASUREMENTS: See Description. CONDITION: See Description.
