Vasili Petrovich Shutov Russian (1826-1887) late 19th Century folk art armchair carved wood decorated at the back with a pair of gloves carved in high relief, the arms modeled as axes, the rails inscribed in Cyrillic Tishe edesh, dalshe budesh [Russian proverb: a stitch in time saves nine] The form is derived from 17th century Russian folk furniture and was originally produced by Shutov in 1870 for the All-Russian Manufacturing Exhibition, held in St Petersburg. 40 1/2"H x 27 1/2"W x 22"D, 18 3/4"H (seat to floor)
