Item Details
Description
Spanish or Italian school; second half of the 17th century.
"Virgin of the Rosary and Assumption".
Oil on copper (x2).
It has a 19th century frame.
Measurements: 19 x 16 cm (x2); 26 x 21 cm (frames, x2).
Set of oil paintings on copper that present the same design in terms of composition and framing. Both pieces show a large border of flowers that gives way inside to an invocation of the Virgin, which due to the way in which they are represented indicates that it is the Assumption glorified among clouds and the Virgin of the Rosary holding the Child Jesus.
In the first quarter of the 17th century a new form of flower painting was developed in Flemish painting which, as it was recreated by a large group of artists and workshops, achieved considerable success throughout the century in much of Europe: the garland of flowers as a frame and an element that enhances a central religious theme. Brueghel de Velurs was the initiator of this type of composition, particularly linked in his work to the depiction of the Virgin and Child. However, it was his pupil, the Jesuit Daniel Seghers, who was the dominant figure in this specialised production and the creator of a prototype that would serve as a model for the numerous artists who followed in his footsteps.
