Description
Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Late Uruk, ca. 3300 to 1800 BCE. A pair of hand-carved shell leopard amulets, with elongated, reclining bodies. Their surfaces are drilled with shallow cavities as the spotted coat pattern, and perhaps were inlaid or painted with contrasting colors. Both are perforated at the ends for suspension to wear as pendants or protective charms, and possibly serve as temple offerings. Leopards were not only venerated for their hunting prowess and stunning pelts, but they had religious significance, and were associated with deities, such as the goddess Inanna, serving as mounts and protectors. Size: 3.25" L x 0.6" W (8.3 cm x 1.5 cm)
