Wilhelm I (1797-1888), a member of the House of Hohenzollern, was the first head of state of a united Germany, crowned the King of Prussia in 1861, and later the Emperor of Germany in 1871. Under the leadership of Wilhelm and his Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Prussia achieved full German unification and the subsequent establishment of the German Empire.
