Description
A historical gelatin silver print titled "Engaged Framing Couple, 1911-14" by August Sander. Inscribed on verso: 167 Brautpaar. A glimpse into the early 20th century where Sander was known for his portraits of Germans from various social and economic backgrounds: aristocrats and gypsies, bohemians and nuns, architects and in this case newlywed farmers. "The individual does not make the history of his time, but he both impresses himself on it and expresses its meaning," Sander explained. "It is possible to record the historical physiognomic image of a whole generation and-with enough knowledge of physiognomy-to make that image speak in photographs." From a private collection. Dimensions of Photograph: 6"h x 4"w / 17"h x 12"w (with matte). In very good vintage condition. August Sander (1876-1964) was a German portrait and documentary photographer. Sander's first book Face of our Time was published in 1929. Sander has been described as ""the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century"". Sander's work includes landscape, nature, architecture, and street photography, but he is best known for his portraits, as exemplified by his series People of the 20th Century. In recent years, the August Sander Archive and scholar Susanne Lange published a seven-volume collection comprising 619 of Sander's photographs, August Sander: People of the 20th Century. Sander and his work are part of the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum.
