Description
This MKT Signal Department Lock, ca. 1920s-1930s is a plain, brass, Yale model lock and was used by the signal department of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The “MK AND T” on the front of the lock is the railroad’s earlier logo, dating this lock to the early twentieth century. One of the main functions of signal departments was to ensure all switches were set correctly to avoid collisions.
Locks were and still are an integral part of railroad safety operations. Railroad locks have to be strong enough to endure harsh, industrial conditions as well as repeated use. They were standardized so that different employees could open them. Early locks were very ornate and customized. In time, locks evolved to plainer brass models with cast initials, like this one, and then to standardized, steel models with stamped railroad initials.
