"Views of Switzerland", folio by Jean Gaberell, 288 pictures in copper intaglio print ["kupfertiefdruckbilder"], and 15 offset color plates [lithographic print]; Introduction in German by Maurice Jaton, the inscriptions under pictures are in four languages- German, French, Italian and English. The folio is published by Jean Gaberell, undated, introduction is dated 1927.
The original title in German:
Gaberells Schweizer Bilder. 288 Kupfertiefdruckbilder. 16 Farbige Offsetbilder. Mit Einer Einleitung von Maurice Jaton Published by Verlag J. Gaberell, Thalwil-Zurich.
Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with metallic silvery lettering on the front board and spine [some wear and soiling, front board is slightly wavy: see photo]; 9" x 11.1/2" (20cm x 29cm); 288 monochrome pictures [printed on both sides], and 15 color plates on heavy paper with tissue guards [color plate# 16 is missing, all other plates are present]; slightly bumped bottom of the pages, very good condition.
Jean Gaberell (1887-1949) was Swiss art photographer. He is best known for his views of Switzerland.
Intaglio ['tiefdruckbilder'] is the family of printing and printmaking techniques in which the image is incised into a surface and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink. It is the direct opposite of a relief print where the parts of the matrix that make the image stand above the main surface.
