Slam-bang mag chockablock with tawdry tales, including "Satan Owned His Soul," in which a crooked lawyer plies assassins with booze and bread to off his enemies, and Lily Renée's "Second Life," in which lions enjoy a ghastly feast of human flesh. Ms. Renée was well-acquainted with atrocities, having fled Nazi-occupied Austria in her youth before finding her way to America, where she soon found work in the Fiction House funnybook factory. Ms. Renée died peacefully in her sleep last August at 101 years old, one of the last remaining links to the Golden Age of comics.
