A woman is staked face-down as an African tribesman approaches from behind, his spear aimed at her rear. Her boyfriend, roped and useless, stares in helpless horror as the scenario unfolds. Critics of the translated versions of Yankee horror mags that circulated abroad claimed that the violence and racial stereotypes in these comics sullied our international image.
"In many comic books dark-skinned people are depicted in rapelike situations with white girls. One picture, showing a girl nailed by her wrists to trees with blood flowing from the wounds, might be taken straight from an illustrated edition of the Marquise de Sade." – Dr. Wertham, Seduction of the Innocent. Rinehart: 1954, p. 104.
