4th quarter 20th Century, France
The lower trunk portion is signed and dated, ""1941 M. Esnault, M.O.F"" The ornate back is made from a much older salvaged piece but coordinates perfectly. Perhaps the base was created as a replacement for something that was damaged. In the style of Henri II, this vintage, pierce cut medallion toped seat for two has carved spade acanthus details, a finial gallery, and at center a spandrel with acanthus carved roundel, having sloping arms with acanthus carved scrolling volute hand rests, trimmed with carved quatrefoil flowers and acanthus carved panels with deep seat storage raised on flattened, turned ball feet.
