Description
Antique Mexican Ex-Voto thanking Jesus for Help after a Mining Accident
Multiple imperfections, oil on tin, framed.
Ex-votos are a Catholic tradition of dedicating a votive painting as part of giving thanks to God (or Jesus/ a particular saint/ or the Virgin Mary) who has helped out the person (the donor) who commissioned the piece. Typically the painting is divided into two parts, and each part tells the story in different detailed ways. The bottom part of the painting tells the story in writing while the upper part of the painting illustrates the action/ the saving of the donor. Ex-votos are still widely created throughout Mexico and began being produced under Spain's colonial rule.
Dated 1894, this detailed painting showcases mining (silver mining?) equipment, Jesus on the Cross, and several male onlookers. The written story takes up the bottom quarter of the frame and is (unfortunately) only semi-legible today. The illustration of the story above the writing clearly shows a crucifixion scene with devout workers/ worshippers below it. To the left of the frame, a man appears to be operating equipment and may have been injured doing so.
