Elof Wedin was born in Sweden, became an orphan, and then immigrated to Minneapolis in 1919. There he settled down and created a family during the years of the Great Depression when he participated in the Works Progress Administration's Federal Arts Projects. For the WPA he painted many landscapes and street scenes of Minnesota, often in abstract and cubist fashions. He also painted portraits and landscapes across the Mid-West.

Here we see a typical combination of his love of straight lines, bold colors, geometrical abstractions, broken forms and complex details related to an abstract street scene based on what he experienced in the town of Black Hawk, Colorado.
