John Russell, RA (English, 1745-1806), "Potrait of a Boy in Red with his Dog," 18th/19th c., pastel on paper laid to canvas, unsigned, with a typed label inscription en verso panel stating "On the Canvas on the back of this pastel there is in contemporary writing the word "J.Hoppner," with a black stencil possibly from Christie's en verso panel, as well as letters and numbers in chalk written en verso panel, possibly from Sotheby's, presented in a gilt frame, H.- 19 1/8 in., W.- 15 1/28 in., Framed H.- 25 1/8 in., W.- 21 1/4 in.

Condition is consistent with age. The paper was cut down and applied to canvas at some point, which is visible on far right, next to frame. The piece is under glass, which could be the white mark that is visible in the photo. There are some areas that show some loss to pastel, primarily to the left of the child’s head and on the red coat the child is wearing. Additionally, there is minor loss of pastel on child’s cheek.
