Newspaper featuring a first report of the death of folk hero and gunfighter J.B. "Wild Bill" Hickox by Jack McCally in Deadwood, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). The report, presented as a letter signed by "J.W.E" notes that McCally was found not guilty in his murder trial after shooting Hickox "just below the right eye, inflicting a wound which caused instant death." The writer muses, "A man don't know how long he will be permitted to live here."
