Description
Silver Star and DFC group to Col. David L. Obert of the 24th Pursuit Group. Col. Obert was stationed in the Philippines during the outbreak of the war and was one of the few fighter pilots available to defend the island. He wrote about his experiences in a book, "Philippine Defender, A Fighter Pilot's Diary, 1941-1942". The book was a later adaptation of a diary he kept detailing his experiences during the Philippine campaign. Upon his return to Allied lines, the diary was classified. Upon his return, he was stationed with the 12th AAF. His Silver Star was awarded: For gallantry in action in the Cavite area in Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 February 1942". Although he escaped to Australia, his wife was interned throughout the duration. A copy of his book is included with the sale. Both medals are officially engraved. The DFC ribbon clasp is broken, however, an original replacement will be included for repair. The cases are significantly worn. The photos shown are not original, and will not accompany the group.
