Description
Native American Cheyenne Pipe Tomahawk. The axe head is made is stipple engraved on both sides, rhombus shaped brass tack decorated shaft, animal trail hide wrapped drop directly above the mouth piece. With tag that reads: “Taken from an old Indian that was killed at McClellan Creek massacre Texas 1874; Cheyenne.” Ex-collection Gary Litherland; Kankakee, Illinois. Ex-collection Terry Relsoh. Ex-collection Gilbert Cooper. Classified as an engraved head on page 103 in the book entitled; “Tomahawks Pipe Axes of the American Frontier" (John Baldwin) a similar example is pictured in plate 250; as a Phase III Western Triangular Blade Forged Head Diamond Cut Eye and a similar stippled Cheyenne example is on page #107 plate 265. Condition: Patina and weathering throughout. Minor surface wear.
