Description
EDGAR DEGAS (AFTER)
Avant la Course.
Color lithograph on Chine volant, 1910. 500x590 mm; 19x23¼ inches (sheet), full margins. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. A very good impression. This color lithograph is based on one of many oils of horses and horse racing Degas (1834-1917) created. He made some 45 oils, 20 color pastels, 250 drawings and 17 sculptures related to horses. Avant la Course is one of three identically titled paintings from the 1880s, each of which similarly capture a spontaneously passing moment, pre-race with jockeys in colorful uniforms on horses. During this time, Degas was reported to have a full-sized, stuffed horse in his studio as well, in order to anatomically manipulate the horse's features.
