Item Details
Description
A Large Apulian Pottery Pelike Style. Size 11 3/8 inches high. Not ancient. Graceful, black-glazed pottery vessel with red-figure painted decoration. Stands on footed base with broad body and slightly flared double collared rim having a reserved band at the top. Also egg and dot pattern above the scenes and meander band with saltire squares underneath. Elegant palmettes on the sides extend to the roots of the handles. Obverse shows pensive Apollo seated to the right. He is playing a white cithara. On his left is a sitting a woman who is listening with full attention while holding her hand on his left shoulder. She’s wearing a stephane and her hair is bound in a kekryphallos with a fillet. On the right, standing in front of a white laver is another enchanted woman swaying with the music, jesturing with a wreath and a little whip. Her hair falls in down her shoulders in tight curls from under a spiked stephane. Both women wear peploi. Apollo’s cloak is draped over his left hand and lower body, revealing his torso. On the reverse is a youth seated to the right and draped in the similar fashion as Apollo. He is holding an owl in his left hand and jesturing at it with his right. On his left, leaning towards him and holding out a bowl and a wreath is a woman wearing a chiton and himation. Hair of both fgures are bound in handbands. Between the figures are a situla, a box with a fillet and three plants. Intact with extensive mineral deposits. On the base are some spills of clear glue where protective felt was once attached. Finely painted. From the collection of Dr. Angelo R. Bergamo, N.J. Acquired 1980’s.
Condition
good condition. Traces of glue at base due to old mount removal.
