Description
Gorgeous map from Mattaus Seutter (1678-1757). Seutter started working life as an apprentice brewer, but apparently it wasn't something he enjoyed and moved to Nuremberg and worked as an apprentice engraver. By the early 18th century, he established his own company. By 1732, he was honored by German Emporer Charles VI, earning him the title of Imperial Geographer. Map is of Gibralter between Europe and Asia and reads Accurata Designation Celebris Freti prope Andalusai Castellum Gibraltar inter in Europam et Africam cum circumjaccentibus Portubus et Castellis cura et impenfis Matthai Seutteri S.C.M.G. Augustani. It is undated with the number 5 hand written and measures 21" x 25.5", unframed.
