Description
NY, PA) or Thomas Brooks cigar store Indian figure, second half of the 19th century. A fabulous carved and polychrome painted Native American female figure with a carved feather headdress. The headdress shows three old metal feathers that were replaced. The top of the head has a hole for linseed oil. The figure is dressed in a robe with a tobacco leaf and beaded necklace. Also holding three tobacco leaves. Carved tunic and fringed leggings, shoes. On a wooden plinth base with iron wheels. There are traces of old "Cigar and Tobacco" painted stencil. Evidence of numerous re-paintings. 73 1/2" tall overall, figure height is 53". Approx. 19 1/2" x 22" at base. Surface is heavily alligatored, mainly to the left side. Heavy paint flaking. Plinth base shows cracking and paint separation. Age appropriate wear. Found in South Norwalk, CT in 1920. Metal earrings are probably a later addition.
