Item Details
Description
Signed Richard Hayley Lever, 'Fishing Boats at St. Ives'. Watercolor Painting on Paper, circa 1904
Richard Hayley Lever (Australian/American, 1876-1958). 'Fishing Boats at St. Ives'. Watercolor painting on paper. Monogram signature and dated in pencil lower right. Hinge mounted on board having handwritten title, date and other notations to board.

Lever was born in Bowden, south Australia in 1875, and studied painting at prince Alfred college under James Ashton. A later inheritance was sufficient to finance a trip to England in 1899 to further his career in painting. He moved to st. ives, a fishing port and artistic colony in the Cornish coast. The town's reputation as a centre for marine painting was largely due to Julius Olsson, who became a prominent british seascape painter. In st. ives, he shared a studio with Frederick Judd Waugh, and studied under the impressionists Albert Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage. He also painted in the french port villages of douarnenez and concarneau and Brittany, directly across the english channel from st. ives. In 1911, Ernest Lawson, an Impressionist painter, persuaded him to move to the united states. Lever arrived in New York City in 1912, and painted views of the hudson river, times square and central park. He also painted in Gloucester, Massachusetts for several summers and in marblehead, Massachusetts. Lever was accepted into lawson's circle of friends, which included Robert Henri, William Glackens, John Sloan and George Bellows. By 1930, he had moved to caldwell, new jersey, staying there until 1938, when he moved to Mount Vernon, New York. While living in New York, he painted marine scenes and landscapes in new jersey, New England, New York and in the Canadian maritimes. A prolific artist, he painted throughout his life, traveling and painting in various locations in the us, Canada and Europe.
