The following is the account written by Margaret Sartor of how she and her husband came to acquire this piece:
"In 1984, John Trask invited my husband Alex Harris to visit and to photograph his home on St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
On October 2, 1984, after completing the photographs of Trask's home, Alex was introduced by Trask to the artist Sam Doyle who lived nearby.
Alex purchased this "welcome Table" that day from Sam. This particular piece was tacked up on the outside wall of a barn when Alex chose it. Sam Doyle took the painting off the barn wall and signed his initials on it that day. The "welcome Table" is painted with house paint on what appears to be a vinyl table cloth (51" x 51").
To best preserve and display Doyle's painting, I carefully cleaned the surface with a soft brush, Q-tips and water. I had a local gallery and frame shop construct a 54" x 54" wood frame with black linen stretched over it. I carefully and discreetly hand-sewed tiny, loose, stitches approx. 2" apart and 1" inside the raw edge of the painting — on top of the linen.
It has hung on our living room wall since then."
