North America, Mexico, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful wooden cane or walking stick, intricately hand-carved with a relief of the Mexican coat of arms featuring a Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattle snake. This state symbol is rooted the legend that the Aztec people would know where to build their city once they saw an eagle eating a snake on top of a lake. Below the coat of arms are 4 more relief snakes that wrap around the shaft of the cane. Size: 1.4" Diameter x 29" H (3.6 cm x 73.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
