Description
Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Seashore Scene" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board.

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Postal Card for the U.S. 15c America the Beautiful, The Seashore, issue of June 17, 1989. At the seashore, water meets land in a marvelous collision of dynamic profusion. A good deal of the wonder and awe inspired by the seashore lies in the very fact that it is never static, always changing. Some elements of a beach may seem to remain the same. Fogs roll in, wrapping the shore in their misty blankets. Seagulls soar overhead, crying their rasping cries. And diminutive beach creatures scuttle to and fro, leaving tiny trails to be lapped up by the waves. But even these things vary, and each visit confronts the visitor with new discoveries, perhaps even unfamiliar terrains. Fickle tide pools come and go, sheltering strange sea creatures for a moment, then leaving with the next wave without even a goodbye. Winds play tag with the ever-shifting dunes, chasing them into closely huddled mounds, or hiding them under gently rolling slopes. Tides artfully sculpt the shoreline, adding sand to make the beach wider here, washing sand away to make it narrower there. All these changes make the seashore an intriguing place to visit, day after day, week after week, and year after year. Because each trip to the shore, be it the first or the fiftieth, can be experienced just once. To celebrate the wonders of the seashore, this postal card was issued at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, the United States' first National Seashore.
