Scarce 19th Century steel engraving of David Rittenhouse, from a portrait by Charles Willson Peale. Sitting at a table, pointing to a document with his left hand. Two books and a telescope are to Rittenhouse's right. Facsimile signature of Rittenhouse below image. The engraver, James Barton Longacre. 6 1/2" X 10 1/2" suitable for framing. David Rittenhouse ( 1732 – 1796) was an American astronomer, inventor, clockmaker, mathematician, surveyor, scientific instrument craftsman, and public official. Rittenhouse was a member of the American Philosophical Society and the first director of the United States Mint.
