Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, El Moro de Peten, Moche, Phase V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of carinated form atop a petite foot with a bulging upper body, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a tapered spout with a thin rim. The cream-hued ground is densely decorated with dark brown fineline motifs that present dozens of curved, striped beads or cacao pods, petite stippling within the surrounding areas, and stripes with multi-armed 'eyes' on the spout and handle. The body also features a pair of large, abstract bird-men, each with an enormous circular eye, an aquiline beak, a wavy body, a massive tail with striped feathers, and a single extended arm brandishing a bundle of armaments. Size: 5.625" W x 7.8" H (14.3 cm x 19.8 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s

Condition
Small nicks and abrasions to foot, body, handle, and spout, with touch-up painting on several areas, and light earthen deposits in scattered areas, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to original decorations. Old inventory label beneath foot.
