Description
**Originally Listed At $900**
Pre-Columbian, probably Guatemala, Olmecoid / Proto-Maya culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fascinating stone head boasting characteristic Olmec features such as a square visage with fleshy lips, jowly cheeks, flared nostrils, slender eyes, and a rounded headdress adorned with a geometric motif - all reminiscent of the famous Olmec colossal heads. These facial characteristics were also commonly associated with were-jaguar transformation during which a shaman would morph into their supernatural counterpart as a jaguar and engage in visionary trances, perhaps induced by powerful hallucinogens. Note the lustrous mica inclusions that glisten throughout the piece! Size: 9.2" W x 13.5" H (23.4 cm x 34.3 cm)
