Description
Lotus Ware is considered to be scarce and possibly the finest porcelain ever produced in the United States. It was made during the 1890s by East Liverpool's Ohio, Knowles, Taylor & Knowles pottery. KTK was doing well in the late 1800’s but wanted to be also known for their beautiful art porcelain work that would and could compete with the likes of Irish Belleek and Limoges. They did this with the creation of their Lotus Ware line. Catalogs from the 1800’s show that blanks or undecorated pieces were created to allow hobbyist and china painting businesses to enhance the beauty of their items. The history of Lotus Ware was not a long one. The fine china was produced for only about 6 years. Even thought it was gorgeous the Americans still preferred European china. Today, only about 5,000 pieces of Lotus Ware survive. The most complete collection is on display at East Liverpool's Museum of Ceramics or in private collections.; This beautiful set has raised relief floral designs interspersed between ridges. It is known as the Venice mold. The natural beauty of the fine white china has had the raised relief flowers beautifully had painted. The lower edge and tops have a soft baby blue tint to them. The artist has added gold accents around the rims and a few gold bands. The set is pictured in ”Collector’s Encyclopedia of Knowles, Taylor & Knowles China by Mary Frank Gaston” on page 34 and can also be seen in the 1800’s catalog listed on 151. There are no chips the creamer does have an old crack about an inch long; gold is slightly worn associated with age. The crack is camouflaged by the flowers so it isn't noticeable . Manufacturing anomalies may exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc. See pictures for condition.; Backstamp: crown KTK co inside circle Lotus ware underneath; Measures: approx POT: 7” L handle to spout x 4 ¼” H x 3 ¼” W Sugar 5 1/2" handle to handle x 2 7'8" w x 2 3/4" H Creamer: 4 1/8" handle to spout x 2 1/2" W x 2 3/4' H
