Description
Ca. Early Bronze Age 2700-2300 BCE. Possibly the oldest piece offered in this auction. Approx. 5" x 3 1/4". Anatolian marble idol, "Kusura-Beycesultan type". Purchased from la Riene Margot, Paris, 1992 (copy of original receipt and certificate of authenticity available if requested). Featured in "IDOLES" French catalog as shown in last photo (2). Very good with age-appropriate wear and nicks. This is the earliest form of Cycladic fertility sculpture identified by scholars; this "violin" type represents a squatting woman, presumably giving birth. Very interesting item offered with an acrylic stand. This one is difficult to estimate as they seldom come to the market, with no recent sales results published. Ex-Nooter coll.
