Description
This scene from the Sixth Book of the Ramayaṇa, the Book of War, narrates one of the battles between the armies of Rama and Ravaṇa for the liberation of Sita. In this episode the army of monkeys enters Ravaṇa’s palace in Lanka and fights against some demonesses. In the upper register, on the left, are Rama and Lakṣmaṇa, while in a central register with a blue background, on the left, are a priest and Ravaṇa. The latter is recognisable by his ten heads surmounted by the head of a donkey. The solid colours and the subdivision of space into registers indicate that the work was produced in Malwa.
