Description
Devotional tempera painting on canvas depicting Heruka bound in tantric embrace to his mystical consort. The wrathful figure is surrounded by six similar figures also belonging to the Heruka group. In the composition there are also dozens of small zoomorphic-headed figures, probably referable to the state of the Bardo, which is the state between death and rebirth. The main figure is depicted here with dark red complexion, provided with three heads and six arms, two outstretched wings and a serpent entwined in flaming headgear, surrounded by flames and united in esoteric embrace with his consort. Both figures hold in their hands various attributes among which one can distinguish a Dharma wheel, a sword, two kapalas, an axe and an ankus hook.
