Description
1827 1st ed Sir Walter Scott Galignani Waverly Novels Napoleon Bonaparte 9v
A highly rare and scarcely printed nine-volume collection of The Prose Works of Sir Walter Scott. A seven-year endeavor, this set was collectively compiled, published, and printed in Paris, France by brothers John Anthony Galignani and William Galignani.
This set was printed after Sir Walter Scott sold his sheets for his works while visiting the Galignani brothers club, called the “Pirates Den” located at the bottom court of 18 rue Vivienne in Paris in 1826. According to Scotts own testimony, the club would charge a monthly fee that included their reading room with an enormous English library of some eighteen thousand books. In addition to their “den” the brothers were known for issuing reprints of English works and would often pay authors for advance sheets of their works in order to print and sell them in France.
These “Galignani sets” would see a very limited print run, thus making them exceptionally rare today especially, as a complete nine-volume set.
