Description
An Antique Carved Panel, The Angel of the Annunciation
German, 17th/18th Century, detailed carved fruitwood panel depicting the Angel Gabriel, a messenger of God bearing good news. Here he is carrying a blooming branch of lilies, his classic attribute signifying the purity of the Virgin Mary to whom he makes the announcement (in Luke 1:28) that she she will bear God's son: Jesus. We see only one of Gabriel's feet here as he is known to stand with one foot on land, the other on the sea. Panel size 3" x 4 1/2", framed size 5 1/2" x 7 1/4"
Purchased: June 14 1996, B.I. Howard, England. Note: original receipt from B.I. Howard stating the panel is South German, 17th century, circa 1660.
Provenance: The Ken and Elizabeth Teasdale Family, St. Louis, MO
