FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, originally serialized in McClure's Magazine from November 1896 to May 1896 to immediate success, and preceded by the first American edition by one month. According to President Theodore Roosevelt, in Captains Courageous Kipling described "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do" ("What We can Expect of the American Boy," 1900).
