Alison, Archibald. HISTORY OF EUROPE… NEW EDITION, WITH PORTRAITS. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1849-1850. 8.5" x 5.25". Complete 14 volume set, illustrated with engraved portraits. Finely bound by Hayday (with his stamp) in full red pebbled morocco, spine and boards gilt, all edges gilt, and gilt dentelles. ************ ACCOMPANIED BY AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY JAMES HAYDAY – prominent 19th century book-binder for wealthy patrons. The letter is written from Hayday's principle place of business at 31 Little Queen Street, and dated July 17th, 1852. The letter is written to Blackwood and Sons (publisher of these volumes) and signed by James Hayday at the end. "I beg to acknowledge with thanks your Cheque for 26.14.0 just received. You have done quite right in papering up those beautiful Specimen books, for such are not often to be met with. I have made up my Mind not to do any more for Glory but in this stance I must say I have departed from my intention and have only charged you what they cost me." 8vo leaf, 2 pp. Laid in is also a small stitched booklet, only partially completed in manuscript (the majority blank) containing names and a short poetic sentiment. Condition
Bindings all intact, spines faded, extremities rubbed, some scratches/scuffs. Contents clean overall with only occasional minor stains or light foxing in limited places.
