Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A charming cast bronze handle finial of a hound dog thrusting his head through an integral loop. A flat tab with perforation for riveting to the side of a vessel or furniture protrudes from one side of the open ring, and the dog's neck twists around the bottom of the band. His slender snout and laid-back ears are finely sculpted into a graceful and lithe hunting companion, the surface covered in a rich patina. Size: 1.6" L x 0.75" W (4.1 cm x 1.9 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Fragment of a larger piece as shown and abrasion to attachment tab. Softening to finer details and rich green patina. Dog's head is intact and well preserved.
