Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A free-blown glass flask exhibiting lovely golden yellow hues. The vessel bears an unusual form that tapers like a bell towards with slightly protruding shoulder, and above is a thick, funnel-form spout. The base of the vessel bears a large central kick and a rough pontil scar, and the exterior surfaces are covered in gorgeous rainbow iridescence that has developed over time. Size: 2.625" W x 5.25" H (6.7 cm x 13.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
Repair to shoulder and restoration to spout, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, weathering film, and light encrustations on body, and micro-bubbling within glass matrix. Great iridescence throughout.
