Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba or Hemba (Bahemba) peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden fetish figure with stylized visage; a large forehead, and a sharply pointed, triangular chin. Surmounting the head is a rounded headdress, made of stuffed leather. The arms rest on the stomach, and the lower half of the figure is wrapped in a twisted fiber cord and animal hide with the remains of brindle hairs on it. Size: 2" W x 10" H (5.1 cm x 25.4 cm); 12.25" H (31.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Losses to top of leather headdress. Stable hairline crack on head. Hide is loose, has several small perforations, and is missing hair in some areas. Fraying of fiber cord. Nice dark patina on wood.
