Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
Kelloggs & Thayer (American, 19th century). "Resaca de la Palma. Battle of May 9th 1846." Color lithograph. Publishing Firm: E.B. & E.C. Kellogg, Hartford, Connecticut; Publisher: Dwight Needham, Buffalo. Ca. 1846. AND "Sketch of the Battle of Sacramento Feb. 28th 1847." Creator unknown, 1847. Two fascinating works that document battles between American and Mexican troops during the Mexican-American War. First, a dramatic color lithograph by Kelloggs & Thayer depicting a scene from the battle of Resaca de la Palma when American forces led by General Zachary Taylor defeated General Mariano Arista's Mexican Army of the North, near what is now called Brownsville, Texas on May 9, 1846. It is a dramatic scene with wounded American and Mexican soldiers in the foreground. Paired with this is a U.S. Government map that shows the positions of Mexican and American troops in the Battle of Sacramento during the Mexican-American War, along with an index of the troop positions, troop statistics and casualties, and reliefs in hachures. The note at the bottom right highlights the fact that while the Mexican soldiers outnumbered the American soldiers by more than 4 to 1, there was only 1 American casualty and 300 Mexican casualties. Size of Sacramento: 12.625" L x 9.875" W (32.1 cm x 25.1 cm); 16.375" L x 13.5" W (41.6 cm x 34.3 cm) framed

Condition
"Sketch of the Battle of Sacramento" has not been examined outside the frame. It appears to show fold marks, creases, normal toning and areas of foxing - with a minute loss to upper left margin. Frame is very good and wired for suspension. "Resaca de la Palma" shows toning, staining, losses/tears to peripheries, and small piece of tape from former matte on the verso. Still, imagery and colors are vivid.
