Artist: William John Huggins (British, 1781-1845). Engraver: Charles Rosenberg (British, 19th c). "H.C.S. Macqueen Off The Start, 26th January 1832" London: Published by W.J. Huggins, 1834. A hand-colored aquatint engraving of the H.C.S. Macqueen - a three-masted British merchant ship - by Charles Rosenberg after British marine painter William John Huggins. An impressive composition featuring the East-India Company ship making sail with a small sailing vessel flying a British flag on the right, and another three masted ship flying a Dutch flag on the far left. Artist William Huggins served numerous years at sea working for the East India Company, and was oftentimes asked to paint meticulously rendered pictures of the company's ships on his return to London. This piece depicts the Honourable Company Ship Macqueen setting sail with twelve other vessels in the wavy waters, with clouds billowing in the skies above. A wonderful piece, replete with impressive artistry, technique, and historical significance, set in an attractive custom frame under glass. Size (sight view): 15.25" L x 19.75" W (38.7 cm x 50.2 cm) Size of frame: 23.5" L x 27.5" W (59.7 cm x 69.8 cm)

The text beneath the image reads, "Painted and Published by W.J. Huggins, Marine Painter to His Majesty. 105 Leadenhall Street. 1834. / H.C.S. MacQueen off the Start, 26th January 1832"

William John Huggins was an accomplished British marine painter to George IV and William IV. He exhibited a work at the Royal Academy in 1817 and would continue to exhibit there until his death. In addition, he exhibited works at the British Institution from the year 1825 on. Huggins' paintings were coveted, particularly because he had extensive nautical knowledge. His works were regarded as portraits of ships that provided a valuable understanding and documentation of shipping during the period.

Similar examples are listed for $3500 - more than twice this reserve.
