Description
A large antique Russian bronze sculpture depicting George the Victorious slaying the dragon, raised on a red marble base with an attached metal plaque bearing an engraved inscription in Russian and the date 1908. This is a nice copy of the equestrian statue of Saint George installed at Prague Castle in Prague, Czech Republic. The bronze sculpture was created in 1373 by Transylvanian Saxon sculptors Martin and Georg of Clussenberch, todays Cluj. The statue was probably cast in Nagyvarad or Großwardein, todays Oradea, where two other works by the two brothers have stood in the dome square until being melted for their metal in the 17th century during the Turkish wars. Russian Antique Metalware, Classic Bronze Sculpture For Collectors.
Dimensions: H 17 5/8 in. All measurements are approximate.
