Description
American. Mid 19th century. Porcelain 'Niagara Falls' pitcher made by United States Pottery Company. Marked with a scroll shield enclosing 'United States Potter Co. Bennington, Vermont. Evokes the rushing water of Niagara and is a rare example of the American ceramic maker's response to the consumer urgency for depictions of the New World. ht. 10.5, wd. 6, dia. 7.5 inches.
Overall good condition. A few hairline cracks, no chipping. Weathering throughout.
From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
