Description
Walter Feldman (1925 – 2017), SLR. "The Plaster King" (Still Life with Cast), 1953. Oil on Panel. Dimensions: 16” x 20”. Unframed. Early in every artist’s career they look to the emerging masters and styles of their generation. For Feldman it was a French artist, Fernand Leger, a pioneer Cubist painter. The “Plaster King” is a great example of Feldman’s exploration of Cubism where he has broken down form into an arrangement of faceted, geometric planes where a plaster bust and ground are integrated. The young artist would move beyond his cubist experiments to try other modern ideas as surrealism, precisionism landing in abstraction. Feldman came to Brown University in 1953 after getting an MFA from Yale and teaching there for 2 years. He won a Fulbright scholarship in 1957. His works have been included in one person and group exhibitions at major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art.
