Description
Dunbar Popcorn Wagon. Charles "Fred" Dunbar went to work for Charles Cretors in Chicago in the late 1800's and was a head machinist for Creators, the inventor of the steam corn-popping machine. When Dunbar and Creators came into conflict in 1902, Dunbar was fired. Dunbar then established Dunbar & Company. Dunbar's air popping method proved to be advantageous for producing large quantities of popcorn. The corn emerged from the popper dry and was kept fresh longer. He also patented an automatic buttering device buttering the corn as the customer ordered it. Dunbar Manufacturing is still in business today and maintains a large business in air poppers that still use Fred Dunbar's 1900 principle. This popcorn wagon, believed to be a Model 1200 was manufactured c.1912. It is thought to be one of only 10 that still exist. It retains its original spoke wooden wheels w/steel rims and is a solid oak structure. The original steam-operating equipment has been updated. It has a 110V circuit breaker and newer electrical components. The interior has no shelves as it was originally made just for selling popcorn. Some restoration has been made by its longtime owner over the years. This rare wagon would welcome a full restoration to bring it back to its former glory. It's an excellent candidate for a custom retrofit or modernization with interior mostly bare, solid running gear and wood spoked wheels free of rot, box frame mostly good and intact but would benefit from reglazing & repaint, upper canopy tinwork and wood framing needs attention, electric popper and later wiring & lights untested and likely needs attention.
