The sitter, Harriet Dawson McDonough, was the wife of Thomas McDonough (1740-1805), British Consul to the New England states after the American Revolution, and the mother-in-law of Dr. George Parkman (1790-1849). Parkman married their daughter, Eliza Agnes McDonough (1797-1877) in 1816. The miniature and brooch with miniature probably belonged to Mrs. George Parkman.
