Description
Lot comprises 24 panels of antique French wallpaper depicting two scenes "Chasse Dite D'Apres Vernet" from the first edition printing in c. 1835. The rare scenic paper is printed on joined sheets attesting to its age and is in very good condition for this type of paper. Originally block printed in France, its manufacturer is unknown. It is printed in Grisaille. It is important to note that this series was taken from a series of paintings by Carle Vernet who excelled in this type of scene and was a noted artist in Paris at the time. An engraving of his work was done by A. Macaire, which is located in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and this Scenic Paper was taken from those engravings as was popular at the time. Panoramic wallpapers were first produced in the early 1800's by French manufacturers, and they remain a uniquely French invention. [Panels approx 75 high inches x approx. 409 3/4 total width inches].
