Haldane Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain Shallow Bowl, made for English market, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), circa 1725, painted in colored enamels and gilt, center coat of arms of Haldane between eagle supports above motto "Suffer", underglaze blue border with flowers, from The Weld Collection, having repaired rim and small crack, diameter 8 3/4 inches. Sourced from Christie's 2012: A soup plate from this handsome service was exhibited in A Tale of Three Cities: Canton, Shanghai and Hong Kong, London 1997 (cat pg. 56), where D.S. Howard writes "the manner of painting the armorial from a bookplate is remarkable and confirms that an actual bookplate was coloured and taken to China - the earliest recorded example of this happening" Weld Collection sticker on reverse (small hairlines and old repair). English market blue and white Armorial bowl. The Arms of Haldane in colors and gilt center as it is on a bookplate the well trim with fine painted cobalt blue decorated centering the crest from same set previously sold at Christie's from Peter H. B. Frelinghuysen, Jr. collection, January 24, 2012.
