Item Details
Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A tall wooden panel of oblong form, perhaps once part of a coffin, depicting the goddess Isis in black, white, red, and yellow pigment atop a surface layer of white gesso. The goddess of magic, music, healing, and protection in the afterlife, Isis presents facing to her left with puffy lips, a sweeping eyebrow, and a large, almond-shaped eye with elongated canthi. A black beaded necklace surrounds her neck above the collar of her red-and-yellow vestment that appears to drape down to her ankles.

According to the University of Southern California West Semitic Research Project, "Isis, along with her husband and brother, Osiris, was most often associated with the funerary cult and the afterlife. Together with three other goddesses, she was thought to guard the internal organs of a deceased person at the time of judgment. Isis, Osiris, and Horus were especially worshipped at the city of Abydos, but reverence for all of them was widespread."

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-David F. Hoff estate, Virginia, USA, acquired in the 1990s
