Description
Central Asia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, or Turkmenistan, Turkoman (Turkman) or Tekke peoples, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A pair of gilt-silver ornaments, both fire gilded and chased: a 30% silver and 65.5% gold pendant with a carnelian cabochon, and a necklace comprised of 40% silver and 50% gold pendant on a brass chain inlaid with glass. The necklace has a pair of gold discs attached to the edge - two are repousse gilt-silver medallions that resemble Dutch coins. The dangling chains and charms on the pendant add an enticing jangling sound to draw attention to the wearer. This pendant was probably part of a pair worn on the temple of the head known as "tenetschir," which attached to a headdress. The Tekke were nomadic people that were skilled riders and silversmiths, the beautiful jewelry was a hallmark of elite members of Turkoman society. Size of temple pendant: 8.75" L x 2" W (22.2 cm x 5.1 cm); gold quality: 65.5% (equivalent to 15K+); silver quality: 30%; total weight: 95.3 grams
